Health preservation is “preventive treatment” and is achieved through various methods such as nourishing the spirit, adjusting diet, exercising the body, being cautious about sex, and adjusting to cold and temperature. It is a comprehensive activity to strengthen the body and prolong life.
Deep Thoughts
First, the health preservation concept of the unity of heaven and man. Chinese medicine believes that the world is a big universe, and the human body is a small universe. Heaven and man are connected, and people are always affected by heaven and earth, just like fish in water. Water is everything about the fish. Changes in water will definitely affect the fish. Similarly, all changes in heaven and earth will affect people. Therefore, Chinese medicine health preservation emphasizes the unity of heaven and man. The method of health preservation is adjusted appropriately with the climate changes of the four seasons, cold and hot, warm and cool.
Second, the health concept of yin and yang balance. People with balanced yin and yang are the healthiest people. The goal of health preservation is to achieve a balance between yin and yang in the body and mind. What is yin? Yin is the material basis of the body. What is yang? Yang is energy. Yin and yang are relative. Everything that goes up, outward, active, and hot belongs to yang; everything that goes down, inward, and cold belongs to yin. The reason why the body gets sick is because the yin and yang lose balance, resulting in excessive yang or excessive yin, yin deficiency or yang deficiency. As long as we try to reduce the excessive side and increase the insufficient side, so that yin and yang can return to their original balance, the disease will naturally disappear. Therefore, Chinese medicine health care highly emphasizes the balance of yin and yang and a healthy life.
Third, the holistic view of the unity of body and mind. Chinese medicine health care focuses on both body and mind. It not only pays attention to the exercise and maintenance of the tangible body, but also pays attention to the cultivation and conditioning of the mind. The body will affect the mind, and the mind will also affect the body. The two are two sides of the same coin and are indispensable.
Prolonging life
The first question raised in the opening chapter of “The Theory of Ancient Innocence” of “Huangdi Neijing” is the issue of functional decline and life span: “I heard that people in ancient times lived to be a hundred years old and their movements were not declining. People nowadays are half a hundred years old and their movements are declining. Is the world different? Will people lose it?” “Shennong Bencao Jing” constantly puts forward the concept of “immortality”. In his book Seeking the Wisdom of Shennong, Nie Wentao pointed out that the development of Chinese medicine and Chinese pharmacology did not rely on accidental experience accumulation, but on the exploration of a large number of ancient philosophers in pursuit of a higher level of health.
The Tao Te Ching once said that those who are good at keeping healthy know how to avoid physical and mental harm. They know how to avoid disease through proper diet and healthy lifestyle, so as to gain health and live longer than ordinary people. When people can stay away from illness, they can naturally delay aging and prolong their lifespan.
